Missed opportunities September 7, 2010 S. Foley (Seattle, WA, USA) The single-player campaign is solid, carefully designed, and very well paced. Players who want to just get on with the story will not have too much difficulty, while the overachievers and masochists can sweat through the bonus objectives and other achievements. However, SC2's only real single-player advancement was the introduction of interactive objects into scenarios. It would have been nice to see more variety, as most of the missions could be categorized as "survive for a length of time", "build up your resources and attack the enemy's base", or "scout/infiltrate an area with limited units." Even a few variations on this theme would have been nice: there's never been a mission with solely air units before, or one where you had to hold a central objective (rather than an area where you're already entrenched) against attacks both on your base and the objective simultaneously.
Now we get on to the more seriously disappointing aspects.
- Single-player voice acting is fair, but the dialogue is unbearably cheesy. It's stuffed full of cliches, in-jokes, and other references that a lot of people may not understand -- and while fan service is great in moderation, there was no restraint shown here.
- The multiplayer has devolved from a carefully balanced strategy game to a mess of micromanagement. There's a lot more emphasis on individual unit abilities, a lot more units that cannot attack either ground or air, and an overall feeling that your army is more of a patchwork (dare I say confederacy?) than a cohesive force. Starcraft 1 would often see games where you focused on a single unit type as the bulk of your army, with a few extra units to add synergy and support, but SC2 forces you into more diversity without offering much in return. Really, what do cliff-walking units give that you can't get from most air units, particularly when they often require similar tech investments?
- The list of the dead (units, that is) is stunning. Science vessels, corsairs, lurkers, dark archons, dragoons, defilers ... and in many cases, the units felt like they were just renamed to avoid the perception of them being nerfed into oblivion.
- [...] 2.0 suffers from a lot of missing features: easy offline gameplay, most of the custom map features one took for granted with SC1, and ways to meet with new people other than "throw me into a random game with strangers." It still feels half-baked, with a curious overemphasis on Facebook integration to the detriment of its overall usability.
I still bought the game to play with friends. But unlike Starcraft 1, I don't see us playing this ten years from now without some serious and far-reaching changes to the multiplayer experience.
About 3hrs played. no intention of playing again September 7, 2010 Aaron K. Jerviss (Blackhills,SD) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought this game upon release. The Download/Install was quite smooth easy.
I didn't find the game fun at all. As a matter of fact seeing as i hadn't played SC for 8-9 years I couldn't tell you what was different between SC1 and SC2. At a distance of years these two games felt like carbon copies. Nothing new.
Seriously save the $60 and continue to play SC1/Brood.
I played the Original and Broodwars probably only just over 100 hours played. I always preferred AgeOfEmpires for my RTS... where I have spent many thousands of hours playing. I liked SC, but wasn't close to my favorite in the genre.
Setting up keybinds was about impossible for me.
When units are clumped as a group and go to send group across map, lol all the units take their own route (Poor design). When I send a group of troops I fully expect them to stay as a Unit. Seriously. These people are poor at designing RTS games.
Maps felt all alike.
I played first 2 missions in the campaign. Then 4-5 skirmishes. Then promptly went back to playing 2002 released Age of Mythology. Far better RTS IMO.
Bottom line SC2 was not fun for me. I cant imagine myself ever playing it again. Say I reformat my computer. I cant Imagine ever downloading my copy SC2 from Blizzard again. The only situation I can imagine playing again, Is if I were at a buddies house and he wanted to play via Lan. And there will probably be support for this eventually.
Just goes to show. Cant always release a winner. I bet Diablo 3 sales are cut in half due to this stinker. It aint just the Lan Play guys down-rating this game. A lot of people did not like this steamer. Doesn't matter who you are Blizzard Fan Boi or Free Lan Play Fanatic,,, cannot deny the fact that this games gets very mixed reviews Even when you take the 5's and 1's out of the mix. The first non Golden Boy Blizzard game ever... This does not bode well for the King.
While some people may enjoy it. Im voting the fairest way i know, since Ive played only about 3 hours and never care to play again, I think a 1 star rating is in order.
PS. Yes you can have my stuff.
RIP OFF September 6, 2010 Franklin (Los Angeles, CA United States) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
REQUIRES ON-LINE ACTIVATION AND INTERNET CONNECTION TO PLAY---EVEN FOR SINGLE PLAYER!!!
FORGET THIS GAME FOR ANY LAPTOP OR TO TAKE ON THE ROAD WITH YOU.
Great game, a few disappointments September 6, 2010 bambislayer The single-player campaign is top notch; I can't stress this enough. It is an excellent story, it gives you some flexibility in terms of completing it, and it also allows for permanent purchasing of some upgrades so you don't have to spend the time researching them on every mission -- this tends to speed things up and remove some annoyances from the first game. Of course in multiplayer you still have to research them so everyone is on an even playing field.
It is disappointing that you really only get to play as one race in the campaign. It tends to put you into a comfort zone during multiplayer, as I find myself primarily playing as Terrans due to my familiarity with them because of the campaign. I also don't like how they removed some units from the multiplayer, but this was probably done because the other races weren't finished and it gives competitive balance. I expect more units to be available in multiplayer as the expansions come out and the Zerg and Protoss races are further developed.
The "always on" [...] is also somewhat annoying, as it limits your options and won't save your achievements if you can't connect.
Looking forward to the next two campaigns, and the multiplayer is fun especially once you get used to playing as all three races.
starcraft 2 was good September 6, 2010 shoes69 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
it was a good game. I liked the cinematic scenes, they were movie quality. Game play was good except for the initial lag but i never expect that to be fixed in any good game, loading lots of elements takes time. The learning curve was good and if you've ever played an rts before most of the elements are familiar, though i wish they had a select all(or all onscreen) hot-key for the military units, sometimes it was just easiest to gather a massive army and throw it at the enemy once you had the upper-hand. I was slightly annoyed that the terran medic was taken out even though i never played the first game. Having to build so many things to get a med ship was normally not worth it especially since even the fully upgrades marines were not much use against anything really, they could take out lone units and be meat shields that was it for them. fairly balanced groups overall but some tactics were so common it was sad, everyone seems to focus on air units, especially protoss. zergs were useless after the first few minutes, if they didnt rush they were pretty much doomed. good balanced game overall and a good intro to rts for beginners.
